Governor of Delta State, Sen. Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa Okowa has commended members of the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress over the cordial relationship his administration had enjoyed with workers in the State.

Governor Okowa gave the commendation during 2023 workers day celebration held at Asaba the State Capital, with the theme, “Workers Rights and Social Economic Justice.”

Okowa who was represented by the Secretary to State Government,  Chief Patrick Ukah, said the relationship between his administration and the Labour union has been wonderful and has given room for unprecedented growth and development in the Delta State.

He said; “I am truly appreciative of every worker in the Delta State not only the resolve of  workers to demand the  improved working conditions and ever present agitations  aimed at winning fair  employment conditions including the commitment  of employers to the provision of favorable clime but  for increased performance and attendant higher productivity.

“Government would always make efforts in creating jobs for youths to curb youths’ restiveness  in  the state saying  that so far, more than 9000 youths have been trained and given starter packs to kick off their business in their respective areas of training and now employers of labour in the state.

“We remain conscious of the need to create jobs for stem youths’ restiveness. This is why, we created the job creation office, more than  9000 youths have been trained and given start-up packs to start businesses in their respective choice areas. We have a pool of well -trained youths who are now employers of labour.”

Governor Okowa also appealed to Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress to extend same cordial working relationship of his administration to the incoming governor, Rt. Hon Sherrif Oborevwori, noting that, the incoming government will be fair to workers in the State.

While appreciating the Nigeria Labour Congress(NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) including affiliate unions in the state  for their sustained understanding and cooperation, Governor Okowa said it is this understanding that made the government to be focused mainly on the task  ahead,  just as he said, workers are part of the massive victory  recorded in the last Governorship and State House Assembly elections in the state stressing that, “this understanding and cordial relationship  should continue  with the incoming Governor and his administration.

“The incoming Governor is not only Labour friendly but understands the challenges workers face just as he assured  that  workers would be carried along in the discharge of his duties in the state.”

In a joint speech,  the State chairman of NLC, Comrade Goodluck Ofubruku and the Chairman of TUC , Comrade Martins Bolum, had earlier said that the Workers are celebrating the 2023 May Day with mixed feeling because it is the last workers day to be celebrated with Governor Okowa.

While appreciating the Governor for his “ unequal performance” in the State , the chairmen congratulated Oborevwori for his victory at the election.

They however appealed that Okowa should handover the present cordial relationship the next Governor for continuation.
