The Vice Chancellor, Delta State University, of Science and Technology Ozoro, Prof. Jacob Snapp Oboreh has charged new students of the institution to shun all forms of deviant behaviours while their stay lasts in the university so they can graduate as excellent individuals.

Oboreh who spoke on over weekend in Ozoro during the 2023/2024 matriculation ceremony for the new students said the matriculation Ceremony of fresh undergraduate students into the University, is a landmark in academia and an ancient academic tradition which confers membership of a tertiary institution on would-be scholars.

He said; “Matriculation is, therefore mandatory for all fresh students, embarking on an academic journey as full-fledged students of the University which actually begins with this ceremony.”

While reeling out the students’ code of conduct and their obligations, Prof Obore  reminded the new students on the need for prompt payment of school fees to enable the University maintain existing facilities and provide new ones.

In his words; “During the next four (4) or five (5) years, you will be part of this great academic community; the Delta State University of Science and Technology, Ozoro. It is a community of scholars, lectures/researchers and students, all of whom have come to learn or to create new knowledge.  In this environment, you will have enormous opportunities to deepen your education, expand your understanding of the society and begin professional training that will launch your future career.  I am sure, you already know why you are here, and that shall be your main focus as you navigate the University.

“Note that the University degree is conferred on students who are found worthy in learning and in character.  I therefore urge you to continue to apply your mind diligently to your studies and make self-discipline your watch word. You should focus on the reasons you have come to the University and therefore shun all acts of misconduct which have been clearly stated in the Students’ Information Handbook,  such as examination malpractice, cultism, sexual harassment,  blocking or sorting and leakage of examination materials.

“You should ensure that you obtain a copy of the handbook and read through it carefully to be well abreast with the rules and regulations governing students activities in the University. Let the handbook be your guide. You should also read notices on board for information.  Ignorance is no excuse in law.

“Always remember that it is the labour of your parents, guardian and family members that brought you to this point.”

The Vice Chancellor, noted that the University has six (6) Faculties which are; Administration and Management,  Agriculture, Computing,  Engineering, Environmental Science and Science.  He also stated that, the University has forty-five (5) departments with forty-five (45) programmes duly approved by the National Universities Commission (NUC).
