Dr Ruppy Raises Alarm of Leukaemia in Two Delta Communities
The Founder, Development Initiative for Community Impact, Dr.(Mrs ) Rachael Missan-Ruppy today raised an alarm that there is “increase in leukaemia” in Ubeji and Jeddo Communities in a Warri South and Okpe Local Government Areas of Delta State.
Dr Ruppy stated this at a one day “Community-CSOs Engagement”  organised by the Environmental Rights Action,ERA/ Friends of the Earth Nigeria in Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta, tagged,”Motives Behind IOC’s Divestments in Niger Delta.”
Dr Ruppy stressed that, the increase of leukaemia in the two Communities is as a result of the exploration activities of the Warri Refining and Petrochemical Company, WRPC.
She said, “I can’t stay in Ubeji and Jeddo because of the “acid rain”. You see it in your cars or your houses. Even with all the surveillances.
Dr. Ruppy who spoke on the impact of divestment in our Communities also said there is increase in human trafficking, sexual and forced marriages as a result of the exploration activities of the IOC’s in the Niger Delta region.
She urged the women to always speak with one voice with a view to holding the Oil Companies and Governments accountable as it regards the pollution of their environment.
